Dee Vazquez is creating a new standard for on-air personalities by captivating all audiences with her quick wit, sense of humor and personable approach. As the new host of The # 1 Countdown: Hip Hop on the Fuse network, Dee is bringing the hottest videos and interviews from elite and groundbreaking Hip Hop artists every week to viewers across the nation. Dee Vazquez is also the co-host of Kay Slay’s Drama Hour on New York’s Hot 97, and the Street Sweepers Radio show on Sirius Radio. And there is so much more to her!

Dee began her television career as a host on the cable access television show Video City, where she was able to gain on-camera experience and became skilled in TV production. After two years of experience, Dee landed the role as the New York correspondent for the bilingual TV show The Roof on MUN2 Network. Being of Dominican and Puerto Rican descent, she was able to connect with her Latin roots on the nationally syndicated TV show.

Apart from television, Dee ventured out as a radio personality with some of the greatest legends in music history. Playing right-hand woman to reggae legend Earl Chin on Rockers Radio and Hip Hop legend DJ Marley Marl on Future Flavaz Radio, Dee acquired the knowledge and confidence to star on her own radio show on Party 105.3 in Long Island. Currently you can hear Dee Vazquez reign supreme alongside “The Drama King” DJ Kay Slay on HOT 97 and Sirius Satellite Radio.

During his Presidential acceptance speech on November 4, Barack Obama told the world that he’d be getting a new puppy for his daughters. On November 7 at his first official Press Conference, President-Elect Obama was asked about what kind of dog they’d be getting, and he expressed the need to have a “low-allergy” dog, but that they wanted to adopt from a shelter. Then he said cheerfully: “Obviously, a lot of shelter dogs are mutts like me, so whether we’re going to be able to balance those two things, I think, is a pressing issue on the Obama household.”

For the past few months, young singer/songwriter Jamie Jones has been speaking out on her multi-racial background, namely with her new single “Whatever.” Like millions of Americans, Jamie’s heritage is diverse, with a mixture of African, European, Latina… and more. She explained her thoughts on this topic in an interview which, ironically, ran on AllHipHop.com the day after Barack Obama’s statement:

“The mutt thing actually started because of my mom – she always called herself a mutt. So me being young and hearing her say it, that’s my mom, she’s a mutt and I’m a mutt too! I kind of embraced it; she doesn’t really know her background and I don’t either. I have to embrace it, I am who I am – I’m Black, I’m white, what if I’m Asian? I used it as a good thing, for anyone else out there that is of mixed race, it’s okay. Don’t feed into the gossip or the negative energy. Just be you!”

In this video from Jamie Jones’ first appearance on 106 & Park’s Wild Out Wednesday back in March 2008, host Terrence J asks Jamie: “What are you mixed with? What’s your nationality?,” and her answer was a shy “I’m a mutt.” After that appearance, Jamie received letters from people of all ages who related to her controversial statement.

Jamie Jones on 106 & Park “I’m a Mutt”

Due to the positive response, Jamie took things a step further by sporting a bold neon shirt reading “I’m A Mutt” for her September 11 appearance on 106 & Park, winning over viewers from across the country to claim the title of Female Vocalist Champion for the 2008 season of Wild Out Wednesday. See Jamie’s winning performance and proclamation in this video, as co-host Rocsi co-signs the “I’m a Mutt” message:

Jamie Jones 106 & Park All-Star Win with “Whatever”

As for the next President of the United States, we all now know that he recognizes racial diversity in ways that will speak to the masses. And in embracing a term once thought of as derogatory, people like Jamie Jones are finding their own identity in their own way. Watch Barack Obama’s press conference and his comments on the next addition to their family… “A Mutt like me“:

The music scene continues to evolve, and fresh faces are a necessity when it comes to ensuring the longevity of Hip Hop. At just 20-years-old, K.O.B. possesses eclectic, youthful energy and dynamic songwriting ability, putting him on par with veteran artists who take entire movements to the next level. His new single “Invisible Man” is setting the pace for his upcoming album on GoodLyfe Muzik, and Kob is ready to set his own standard for the future of musicality in Hip Hop.

Born in 1987 in Minneapolis, K.O.B. (an acronym for Knock Out Bars, pronounced cobe) spent his entire childhood immersed in music. While his father, a former model and actor, worked to feed his family as a postal worker, he also instilled in KOB a passion for performance. KOB began playing the drums at four-years-old, and latched on to old Rock & Roll and Blues music, ironically the same roots that became the foundation of Hip Hop in the 1970’s. KOB’s uncle, world-renowned jazz pianist Peter Schimke, also had a profound impact on the musical direction of the budding songwriter.

“As I’ve grown up, I’ve watched my uncle’s career and the moves he’s made, and it’s provided a blueprint of do’s and don’ts in the music industry,” says KOB. “His struggles and successes have taught me how to approach different situations. My dad instilled in me the love of music. Music became my escape, my way to handle my problems in a creative and constructive way.”

While struggling to fit in at school and avoid the temptations of the inner city streets, KOB made a strong connection with a neighbor named Tyrell “L” Edwards. Tyrell introduced KOB to rap music, which at the time wasn’t heavily exposed on Minneapolis radio. L and KOB began writing rhymes and performing around the neighborhood. Eventually L lost interest in performing music, but for KOB, the fire had just begun to burn.

Though he had been writing and performing for a few years, it wasn’t until 2002 that KOB stepped into the booth and recorded his first song. He was picked up by the local label Ill Concept Records in 2003. Though he was recording steadily, he lacked an important piece to his music: beats. His uncle believed in KOB’s talent and donated an old Roland XP-50 keyboard, which gave KOB the ability to produce his own tracks.

In 2005, four months before he graduated from High School, KOB released his first, self-produced project entitled Ethinomicks. For the next year, KOB and singer Marcus Allen independently promoted Ethinomicks, performing locally and nationally, vigorously demanding attention as one of the city’s better artists. During this time, KOB also met an important piece to his future, producers Tommy Real and Don Diego of Real Explicit Music. He immediately began working on his next project entitled Ballad of a Teenage Nobody. More important than the album was the guidance he received. Tommy Real, a former rapper himself, showed KOB how to write hooks, structure tracks, produce beats and navigate Pro-Tools.

In late 2005, KOB enrolled at The Institute of Production and Recording, but inevitably dropped out a few months later. “I didn’t want to be an engineer; I wanted to be an artist,” he explains. “You can’t be taught music, you gotta feel it.” KOB credits his lifetime experience as a percussionist as the backbone for his talent. “I’ve tried other instruments, took guitar lessons and tried piano, but drums were the only thing that could really keep my attention,” he says. “It gave me a physical rush similar to what rapping does for me, and it made me extremely aware of how to ride beats properly. The cadence and delivery in someone’s flow can feel more like another instrument on the beat.”

After putting in more work on his own, KOB was introduce to GoodLyfe Muzik exec Varmah Morris by a friend, and Varmah refused to let KOB slip away. Morris and his two business partners signed KOB to GoodLyfe Muzik and Morris Music Group Inc. With a good team on his side that shares his love for the music, KOB has been creating his first album, and has spent the Fall of 2008 touring on the LOD College Tour and appearing at Hot Import Nights events throughout the country.

KOB’s upcoming album is a work in progress. The production and guest appearances include a refreshing array of emerging talent, including Tommy Real, Diego de la Vega, Pop/R&B singer TP, Chicago team Big Head Beats, Minnesota’s Team Voltron (Face O, Lunchbox and Verse), and the 16-year-old phenom Prodigy (not to be confused with emcee Prodigy of Mobb Deep) who produced the new single “Invisible Man.” Crooner JC brings light to the hook on “Invisible Man,” and will be featured on another track on the album as well. The project will surely to bring a new age of Minneapolis sound to the world.

“I really just want people to relate to me with my music,” KOB explains. “I just do me, and I think people connect with that. My life isn’t your life, but you can hear and feel the emotion in my lyrics and voice. I want people to recognize my abilities, but also the authenticity. ‘Invisible Man’ is really the perfect introduction of Kob to the world. Unlike a lot of radio records, it is a little more lyrical. I just think it’s the perfect showcase of ‘This is KOB!’ - I’m the Invisible Man… the superhero here to save Hip Hop and bring it to the next generation!”

In this day of “instant” computer-generated hits and cookie cutter beat making, producers with true musical ability are few and far between. Bronx-born percussionist Amadeus understands what musicianship means to making songs that will stand the test of time. The young producer has been making an impact on popular music with songs for Busta Rhymes, 50 Cent, Fabolous, Jim Jones, Danity Kane, Donnie Klang, Trina and many more, and is the band director for Atlantic Records R&B star Trey Songz. As the newest addition to Bad Boy’s legendary Hitmen, Amadeus is currently working on Diddy’s next solo album, due for release in 2009, amongst other projects.

Antwan “Amadeus” Thompson discovered his talent and passion for music in grade school, and began playing drums and piano at church (where his is active to this day) and in school bands. His first break came when he produced Foxy Brown’s 2003 single “My Life (Cradle 2 The Grave),” the title track for the Cradle 2 The Grave soundtrack, giving Amadeus his first Gold award. The success of the soundtrack was followed quickly by Foxy Brown’s street single “Get Off Me,” which addressed her tumultuous relationship with rapper Eve.

Amadeus took the initial success and ran with it, despite setbacks like having other producers take credit for his work. He has since created thumping tracks for various critically acclaimed artists. Amadeus has steadily been building a reputation as one of the most in-demand urban producers in New York, earning Platinum and Gold status with Mike Jones, Cam’ron, Fabolous and Danity Kane.

Other song collaborations include work with Jim Jones, Bow Wow, Talib Kweli, Busta Rhymes, Remy Ma, Papoose, Marques Houston, Trey Songz, Cee-Lo, Young Chris, Lil Wayne, Gillie Da Kid, Joe Budden and ESPN. Amadeus also put his magic touch on two slept-on singles for Lil’ Mo’s last project - “Yeah Yeah Yeah” featuring Grammy-winning violinist Miri Ben-Ari and “Sumtimes I” featuring Jim Jones.

Amadeus has appeared on numerous TV show’s including BET’s 106 & Park (six times), Rap City and Rap City Top 10 with Mike Jones. His natural charm and communication abilities have transitioned nicely into business as he builds up his own Platinum Boy Music imprint. He is currently developing two projects, songstress Tiffany Mynon the “Angel of R&B,” and Hip Hop artist Ravenus P.N.I.C.

“Tiffany has been singing and performing all of her life in various groups, including Assorted Phlavor (Epic Records),” explains Amadeus. “I believe in her, and look forward to sharing her and her God-given gifts with the world - I’m sure she would be of inspiration to so many women out there. Ravenus has a special gift, and he is going to make a great addition to the Hip Hop scene.”

With so many responsibilities, a serious management team became necessary, so Amadeus now has Francesca Spero, Harve Pierre and Conrad Dimanche of The Hitmen/Bad Boy Entertainment helping him achieve his goals. To keep his publishing business in order, Amadeus works with Cherry Lane Music Publishing. “I’ve been a part of the music business for 11 years now, since I was 16-yrs-old, and I’ve been solo for the majority of that time,” he explains. “I hooked up with a few people along the way, but I’ve landed about 90% of my placements on my own. Now I’ve joined a team with my name already established as a successful multi-Platinum producer, and it’s a great look to have people in my corner to support and back me 100%.

Many challenges arise when you’re on your way to the top, and Amadeus takes most in stride. Taking on projects with Bad Boy has definitely raised the bar for his talent, and is offering new outlets for creativity. “I must say the most challenging project I’ve had the opportunity to work on so far is Diddy’s new album,” says Amadeus. “He has been blessed to have traveled the world to see the many varieties of music, and there is so much global influence with this new project. He’s has totally re-invented himself, and I’m working diligently trying to grab hold of his vision musically.”

As Amadeus grows in each of his ventures, he maintains a firm ideal for his talent. “Every day I try to venture into different genres of music, and I will not allow anyone to box me in to having one sound. Some producers are so distinct that when you hear the track you know who produced it immediately. Not me! I want to trick you every time - you will have to read the credits to know I produced it, because it doesn’t sound like the last song I did. It’s difficult, because artists and labels are scared to take chances on different sounds, but I know that in the end I’ll be remembered for my versatility.”

New times demand fresh tactics. So when Jake the Snake moved to New York in 2008 to pen his release When in Rome, he shed his skin and emerged from underground a tougher, more enlightened J the S. Now, with a buzzing video for “Another Round” featuring Atlantic Records’ budding star B.o.B., a new street album My Will hosted by DJ Warrior & Mr. Peter Parker, and subsequent third album The Last Days coming in early 2009, J the S is determined to penetrate rap music’s commercial consciousness.

Jake spent his first years in the West Indies, where his father hustled and both parents mingled with the popular musicians of the time. Domestic and economic situations changed for the family, so they relocated to Massachusetts. Throughout his youth, Jake was introduced to criminal elements on the street and at home. A volatile domestic situation and flawed role models inspired a notebook full of rhymes and dedication rarely seen in young artists.

Despite coming up in Boston behind underground icons such as Mr. Lif and Esoteric, J the S remained faithful to blacktop Hip Hop. As a result, he became a regular show opener for artists like Kool G Rap, AZ, Cormega, The Beatnuts, Boot Camp and Wu-Tang. To date, Snake has amassed a solid foundation. Before he could legally buy alcohol, he graduated from the local battle circuit and begun to script vicious narratives.

In just four years, J the S dropped two internationally distributed full-length albums and a pair of venomous mixtapes, landed singles on Rap Network, Rap Attack Lives and CMJ charts, and enjoyed rotation on more than 300 college radio stations including Boston’s renown WERS, where he earned “Artist of the Month” honors in June 2007. Beyond his East Coast ethos, J the S is also marked by his experience as a middle school teacher and his socially progressive mission, which has landed him on bills alongside dead prez, Brand Nubian and KRS-One.

“I love and rep Boston, that’s my home,” J expresses, “but I also grew up in the West Indies, on the islands of Nevis and Montserrat, then around other parts of New England, so I feel lucky to have a little broader perspective on things. There is a lot of Hip Hop and urban music history in Boston, and a lot of variety to this day. I strive to walk my own path, and I feel proud as an artist coming out of Boston carving my own lane. Because I’ve lived other places, I’ve been able to travel through this music, and I try to make music for the world. I want to talk about issues that everyone can relate to.”

On the strength of his 2006 album Strategy of the Crown, which featured guests including Ras Kass, Trife da God and Devin the Dude, J the S followed up with his DJ Vlad-hosted Year of the Snake Vol. 2. The sequel to his Peter Parker-hosted Vol. 1, the mixtape proved that he could rock consecutive projects with – or without – headliner associates. Featuring limited assists from Boston cronies such as Loose Notes and his own Greater Good crew, J the S gave fans enough original material to choke on until his next endeavor.

In March of 2008, J the S dropped the project When In Rome. Beyond cameos from the likes of Joell Ortiz, Skyzoo, Slaine and Ras Kass, the powerful street album introduced rap fans to an MC whose pilgrimage to Hip Hop’s pinnacle was a long, disciplined and rewarding journey. The Joell Ortiz assisted single “Do You” peaked as #1 song nationwide on the two premiere college radio charts nationwide, Rap Attack Lives and Rap Network, aside from garnering commercial radio attention and mixtape love.

Despite the recent apathy of Hip Hop fans seeking that “missing” piece to the music, J the S feels confident that he delivers the right balance of what people want and what they need in the genre. “When people say ’something is missing’, it’s usually those who are bored with the state of music, or aren’t getting what they want from the music at the time,” he explains. “I have my personal opinions of what’s missing from Hip Hop right now, so I try to bring those missing elements - but everybody wants different things. What I bring to the table is a mix of the story telling and picture painting, so you can visualize what I’m speaking on, so you can feel like you’re right there with me. I bring a voice of pain, of intelligence, and of hunger to improve.”

J’s new project My Will is a street-friendly prelude to his upcoming full-length album The Last Days. Presented by DJ Warrior and Peter Parker, My Will features original production from the likes of MGI, Stu Bangas and Raf Moses, and impactful guest appearances from Kool G Rap, B.o.B., Donny Goines, Emilio Rojas and The Greater Good crew.

“My Will is a perfect transition for my album The Last Days, because there are a lot of messages that I have on this project that segue into the concept of my official album,” asserts J. “I feel The Last Days is my best work to date, no question. When it hits, it’s gonna be serious - but these are serious times, right?”

He might be an anomaly, but J the S is poised to be a factor in Hip Hop’s return to form, while expanding his realm with new sounds. If he can pull it off in Boston, where pushing Golden Age street styles is less common than being a Republican, he can do it anywhere.
