WORLD FAMOUS ROCK STEADY CREW HOLDS 28th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

Presented by Backspin Productions
July 27 through July 31
New York City and New Jersey!
Sponsored by Scion, Red Bull, Power 105.1 FM

The legendary B-boy crew that helped to sustain the art form and popularize B-boying in the mainstream will celebrate its 28th Anniversary with five days of festivities from July 27th-31st! Events include a celebrity basketball game, a special Rock Steady Crew performance, the End Of The Weak MC Challenge, a free outdoor concert, and, most notably, the invitation-only B-boy/Girl Battle which crowns the best breakdancers in the world.

For 31 years, B-boying has been an integral component of Hip Hop culture and other dynamic subcultures. It has taken over the mainstream via top-selling artist videos, and has been incorporated into lifestyle brand campaigns. The Rock Steady Crew 28th Anniversary will honor the veteran B-boys who have dedicated their lives to mastering their craft, while shining light on the new generation of Rock Steady Crew members - all signified by this year's theme: Stay Legendary.

Additionally, the First annual Spy Award, named after legendary B-boy Spy of the Crazy Commanders Crew, will be presented to B-boys Kamel and Wicket. This prestigious award is for B-boys and B-girls that Rock Steady Crew believes represent the art of breaking to its highest degree of integrity. To be considered for the award, candidates must have a minimum of 10 years experience, and must meet a strict criteria of foundational understanding, innovation, and all-around influence. RSC hopes that this honor will serve as a source of inspiration for the next generation of B-boys and B-girls to continue to preserve the essence of the art form, while growing with the evolution of the dance.

Throughout the early ‘80s, the Rock Steady Crew championed the B-boy movement, gained the support of Hip Hop's godfather, Afrika Bambaataa and the Zulu Nation, and garnered national mainstream acceptance. Each year Rock Steady Crew's President, Crazy Legs, hosts and organizes The Annual Rock Steady Anniversary. The event was originally started in 1991 to memorialize slain member Buck 4 and to celebrate Hip Hop culture.

The annual celebration has become a monumental Hip Hop gathering, drawing over 20,000 attendees from around the world. The anniversary is also an opportunity for some of the most influential and dynamic personalities in Hip Hop to unite.

Note from the Rock Steady Crew: Because of the City Council of Newark dropping the ball on this years venue for the outdoor event, it will be moved to an indoor location in NYC. We were told that Military Park in Newark, NJ was available and in actuality, they had reserved it for another event on the same day. This would have been avoided if the Councilman that was supposed to make everything happen would have followed up the way he promised us last year in the Mayor's office. We do not hold the Mayor's office accountable for this in any way. They have continously tried to make things go as smooth as possible for us.
The event at The Cherry Lounge will remain free to honor the way hip hop jams were started in the beginning, but space will be limited. There will be a live graff exibition outside the venue as well as other surprises if things go right. We always try to maie the anniversary a special time for everyone.
The outdoor event will be back in full effect next year.

ABOUT THE ROCK STEADY CREW

Established in 1977 by Bronx B-boys Jimmy D and Joe Joe, the Rock Steady Crew has grown to thousands worldwide, and has become synonymous with the preservation of true Hip Hop culture. In 1979, Jimmy D put Crazy Legs and Lenny Len down with Rock Steady just in time to add new life to the art form and take it to the next level.

In 2003, Mayor Bloomberg proclaimed July 26th to be Rock Steady Crew Day in New York City. Rock Steady Crew received the Key to the City of Las Vegas on February 21, 2004 for their work with the Las Vegas Arts District. Crazy Legs and Rock Steady regularly host events at The Point community center in the South Bronx, donating proceeds to the center for their youth programs. It was his dance program at The Point for young people that garnered him the “New Yorker of the Week” Award from New York 1 News. Each year at the RSC Anniversary, sponsorship proceeds from the Celebrity Basketball Tournament go to the Greenwich Village Youth Council.

The Rock Steady Crew performed for the Reagan inauguration in 1980. They were the first B-boys to perform at Carnegie Hall on Jan 19, 2001. The crew also performed in a tribute to the Nicholas Brothers at the Kennedy Center Honors, the Royal Variety Performance for Queen Elizabeth II, the Boston Ballet Gala, and the Lincoln Center Serious Fun! series.

Crazy Legs has been featured in such films as Flashdance, Beat Street, Wild Style and Style Wars as well as various television programs and music videos. He participated in the Peabody Award-winning documentary Dance in America: Everybody Dance Now, the Great Performances 20th Anniversary Special, and co-produced the documentary movie The Freshest Kids. He performed in the Off-Broadway play Jam On the Groove, and taught actor John Leguizamo to B-boy for his Tony Award-nominated play Freak. He has choreographed music videos for Wyclef Jean and multi-platinum artist Moby.

The Rock Steady Crew Anniversary is held annually to symbolize the preservation of the history and evolution of Hip Hop Culture. This monumental community event brings out DJ’s, B-boys/B-girls, graffiti artists, emcees and thousands of other positive Hip Hop heads from all around the globe. The celebration also honors members of Rock Steady Crew and members of the Hip Hop community that have passed away.
